PHOTO: Mounted officer D. Herrejon comforts his dying patrol horse Charlotte, after she was fatally struck by a vehicle while on patrol last week.
The 6-year-old chestnut and her rider had been regularly policing the Houston Texas area for the past four years.
A spokesman for the Houston Police Department said the two were doing just that on December 3rd, when Charlotte was suddenly “spooked” by passing traffic.
In her panic she bucked Officer Herrejon, then collided with a cement truck, badly injuring her legs and causing her Line of Duty Death shortly after.
The photo above shows Charlotte prone at the scene, with her heartbroken human partner close beside her, keeping the fallen equine calm till a vet could come to euthanize her.
The driver who clipped the patrol horse has not been charged for the freak accident.
