A missing baby is now feared drowned after police have determined his suicidal father plunged with him into the Connecticut River this week.

Tony Moreno, 22, survived the incident and is presently hospitalized in serious condition, but his infant son is believed to have perished, although the child’s body has not been found.

Missing Drowned banner for Crime MagazineMoreno (formerly IDd as ‘Morano’ in news reports) has not been charged for the crime yet. However, he was the subject of at least one restraining order petition by the slain baby’s mother, Adrianne Oyola, who cited safety concerns for herself and the boy as reasons for seeking police protection.

The estranged couple was reportedly fighting over custody of 7-month-old Aaden Moreno, and, considering his malicious murder, Oyola’s fears seemed to have been well founded, despite a judge denying her urgent request only last week:

"He has told me he could make my son disappear any time of the day," she ominously wrote in her court papers. "He told me how he could make me disappear, told me how he could kill me. I sometimes am scared to sleep. He told me he would put me in the ground and put something on me to make me disintegrate faster."

"I can't bring Aaden around my family without [Moreno’s] approval, “ Ms. Oyola added. “But he could do anything he wants without letting me know … I feel that he is a danger to my child and me and would like to leave with my child and get full custody."

It’s not clear why the judge assigned to hear the matter denied the battered woman’s application for a restraining order, but a Connecticut coalition of victim advocates says justices need to be better educated about domestic abuse, and more sensitive as well.

Rescue teams discontinued their search for the missing baby last night, but resumed those efforts in earnest early this morning, as a body recovery operation instead.
