Did Shutout Pitcher Mike Fiers Use a Performance-Enhancing Substance on His Balls?

Aug 23, 2015

Mike Fiers’ recent no-hitter against the Dodgers has some folks who think his pitching was a bit too slick angrily claiming foul play this weekend.

They’re raising a lot of other eyebrows, too, with video stills of the Astros versus Dodgers game which seem to show a shiny residue on the celebrated shutout pitcher’s glove.

That’s proof, say a growing number of critics, that Fiers robbed opponent batters of hits they might’ve otherwise made -- not with his exceptional ball-throwing skills, but rather with a performance-enhancing substance.

Of course, Fiers adamantly denies tampering with either his ball or glove to win, an act which is illegal in Major League Baseball and would be as scandalous as QB Brady’s deflate-gate was, if not worse.

“I don’t know what they are talking about,” Fiers told reporters, suggesting the shiny glove effect that people are complaining about “could be a different lighting or camera angle or a lot of things -- I don’t know.”

Happy Astros manager A.J. Hinch also shrugged off the controversy, citing his starting pitcher’s boundless talent and abilities, and a lack of evidence:

“Last night was about Mike Fiers being a really good major league pitcher and he had a great accomplishment,” Hinch stated. “Anything that takes away from that is unfortunate, unless there’s this massive proof.”

Actually the only *massive proof* of wrongdoing against the Astros this year concerns the Saint Louis Cardinals’ illegal hack of the MLB team’s most sensitive records.

It hasn’t been revealed yet if Mike Fiers was one of the Astros' players whose stats and data the Cardinals wanted to sneak a peek at, in what the FBI has called the most “unique” domestic cyber attack to date.

Slippery-gloved or not, Fiers tossed 134 pitches to the Los Angeles Dodgers, none of which the opposing team hit, giving the Astros a 3-0 victory that’s now being contested by those calling him a cheat.
