Deputies: Boy, 2, left strapped in car seat in vehicle for 8 hours

Thu, 04/18/2013 - 10:22

Around noon on Wednesday, 911 dispatchers got a call from one of Jadiel Rosario's parents after mom and dad realized they had left the toddler buckled in his car seat inside a car for eight-hours, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

It seems the Tampa family had been visiting with relatives and returned home about 4:00 a.m., the release stated.

Both parents had thought the other had taken the 2-year-old boy out of the car seat, deputies said.

The parents, Alexander Rosario and Douceaymee Lopez-Alvarez, both 26, have four kids, ages 8, 7, 3 and 2. The couple told deputies it is common for them to keep late hours and for the child to sleep until almost noon, according to the report.  Full Article

24 IRS workers accused of theft

Thu, 04/18/2013 - 10:08
Tennessee – First it was the families of dead people and state employees. Now, authorities say Internal Revenue Service employees in Tennessee were stealing unemployment and other benefits while fully employed.

On Thursday, 13 of those employees were indicted on federal charges that they lied to get unemployment, food stamps, welfare and housing vouchers. An additional 11 have been indicted on state charges of theft greater than $1,000.

In all, authorities say the workers improperly received more than $250,000 in government benefits.

“You’ve got these employees that are taking advantage of the system that they are so intimate with it by virtue of their jobs,” said Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirech, whose office is handling the state prosecutions. “It’s doubly frustrating.” Full Article

Wife of Ex-Judge Is Charged in Killings of Texas Prosecutors

Wed, 04/17/2013 - 10:49
DALLAS — The wife of a disgraced justice of the peace has been arrested and charged with the murders of the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife, and another prosecutor, the authorities said on Wednesday.

The wife, Kim Lene Williams, 46, was booked into the Kaufman County jail shortly before 3 a.m. on Wednesday, according to county jail records. She was charged with capital murder, which means she could face the death penalty if convicted, according to law enforcement officials involved in the investigation.

The authorities have recently focused on her husband, Eric Lyle Williams, who was convicted last year of stealing computer equipment in a case handled by the two prosecutors. Investigators recently searched a storage unit that appeared to have been rented at Mr. Williams’s request and found more than 20 guns and a car that might have been used in at least one of the killings.  Full Article

Marathon bombs likely made from pressure cookers, shrapnel, sources say

Tue, 04/16/2013 - 11:05
Pressure cookers – possibly activated remotely by a cellphone – are believed to have been used to make the crude bombs that sent deadly shrapnel hurling into a crowd of onlookers and competitors at Monday’s Boston Marathon, experts told Fox News.

Doctors treating some of the 176 injured victims believe the explosives were packed with deadly shrapnel, including pellets, nails and sharp metallic objects – with some patients having “40 or more” such fragments embedded in their bodies.

“Many of them have severe wounds mostly in the lower part of their body – wounds related to the blast effect of the bomb, as well as small metallic fragments that entered their bodies – pellets, shrapnel, nails – that these bombs had,” George Velnahos, chief of trauma surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, said Tuesday.  Full Article

Tara Driscoll, 35, a former English teacher at Law, Government and Community Service HS in Cambria Heights, pleaded guilty last June to having sex with the minor at the Capri Lynbrook Motor Inn, a 15-minute drive from the school.

But earlier, she brazenly had sex with two other students at the school, where her serial shenanigans were uncovered by girlfriends of the teacher’s pets, the report by schools investigator Richard Condon charges.

She locked the door and put a chair against the knob to secure it. Full Article

Sat, 04/13/2013 - 06:50
What does the federal hate crimes law inspired by the murders of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. have to do with an internal dispute among the Amish in which the beards of men and the hair of women were forcibly sheared?

“The scissors used to cut the hair were manufactured in one state and used in another,” explained Edward Bryan, defense lawyer for Amish bishop Samuel Mullet Sr., who was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.  Full Article

Workers at Philly abortion clinic saw few options

Sat, 04/13/2013 - 06:33

PHILADELPHIA – They say they were just doing what the boss trained them to do.

But eight former employees of a run-down West Philadelphia abortion clinic now face prison time for the work they did for Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Three have pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.

And Gosnell, 72, is on trial in the deaths of a patient and seven babies allegedly born alive.

In testimony at the capital murder trial this past month, an unlicensed doctor and untrained aides described long, chaotic days at the clinic. They said they performed grueling, often gruesome work for little more than minimum wage, paid by Gosnell under the table.  Full Article

Rehtaeh Parsons Case Solved By Anonymous In Two Hours

Sat, 04/13/2013 - 06:19
Anonymous says they know who Rehtaeh Parsons’ rapists are, providing a little extra “incentive” for Canadian authorities to re-open the case themselves.

Rehtaeh took her own life last week at the age of 17 after being gang raped in 2011 and relentlessly bullied by her classmates and peers ever since.

A photo of the rape was reportedly circulated throughout her school and community, and she was constantly bombarded by texts from boys asking her to sleep with them and others from girls calling her a “slut” and a “whore.”

Police initially closed the case, saying that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge the alleged perpetrators rapists from the 2011 incident. After Rehtaeh committed suicide last week, it seemed like the tragic end to a pretty horrifying tale.

This week, the Internet hactivist collective known as Anonymous picked up the story, and decided to pursue their own investigation. According to a statement released by @YourAnonNews, one of the largest news handles for Anonymous, the group was able to confirm the identities of the rapists in roughly two hours.  Full Article

Metairie man arrested after he posts pics of himself wearing stolen jewelry on social media sites, cops say

Sat, 04/13/2013 - 06:15
Louisiana – A Metairie man was arrested after he allegedly uploaded photographs of himself wearing stolen, customized jewelry to Facebook.

Floyd Munson, 26, of Kenner, is also accused of posting multiple Instagram messages/photos of himself as he taunted the owner of the jewelry, which was taken during an armed robbery.

The unidentified victim didn’t know any of the three men who kicked down the door of his Dawson Street home in Kenner . The armed robbers made off with four custom-made pieces of jewelry that included pendants bearing a crown and the words “2 Deep,” McGregor said.

A few days later, the victim began receiving threatening messages on Instagram, a social media website that allows users to share photos. In the pictures, a man taunted the victim while wearing one of the stolen necklaces, daring him to do something about it, the arrest report said. Full Article

The encounter occurred March 26 at 5:09 p.m. at the South Ferdon Boulevard store. Man Gets 7 Years for Stealing Obama's Teleprompter

Fri, 04/12/2013 - 09:35
A career criminal who stole a truck containing President Obama's audio equipment was sentenced Thursday to seven years in federal prison.

Sentencing guidelines called for a term of about three years, but Eric Brown of Richmond, Va., agreed to the longer sentence to avoid prosecution for 14 similar truck thefts in three localities. However, he could still face charges in Stafford County, which did not join Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico counties in the agreement.

Brown pleaded guilty in January to theft of government property.

"The theft of government property is a serious offense," Assistant U.S. Attorney Roderick Young said in court. "It's all the more serious when the property belongs to the White House Communications Agency."  Full Article
